You’re probably here because you love movies. I do, too!
Hi there, I’m Kristen!
In 2012, I started keeping track of every new movie I saw for that year. Looking back at my lists at the end of the year, I realized how few foreign films I had watched. It became my mission to be more inclusive of films from different countries and decades. So here we are!
I love film. Growing up in Los Angeles and coming from a family of people who worked in the entertainment industry, it was only natural that I grew up loving movies. I’ve seen a lot – the good, the bad, and the ugly (pun intended) – and I love it all. However, I’ve noticed throughout my viewings that I often, err—scroll past movies that aren’t domestic. But why? Perhaps reading subtitles for a movie that isn’t in English seems like work, and I want to watch a movie to relax and enjoy.
After some discussions with friends and doing some research of my own online, I found that I’m not the only one. And this blog is the manifestation of my epiphany that there are a lot of people like me.
Foreign film is great because film is great. Our own hesitations about seeing foreign movies either at a theater or on our couch reveal our own prejudices about storytelling and the society we live in. My goal for Far Away Films is to show you that films that were made far away can feel like home. Through my recommendations and reviews, I hope to share with you some of my favorite foreign films that I see and in doing so, let us further understand why we watch movies at all: to connect with other humans and better understand our world through storytelling.
